LAGOS – Surulere Sport City has emerged the champions of the 2013/2014 Lagos State Grassroots Soccer League otherwise known as Lagos J-League.
Taofiq Aromire, the league Secretary, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that 20 clubs took part in the U-20 league for boys.
Aromire said that matches in the league, which began last year September and ended March 30, were played across the 20 councils in the state.
According to the secretary, Surulere emerged the champions with 49 points from 19 matches, won 16, drew one and lost two.
Surulere beat YMD Babes of Ojo with the same points to the second place on goals aggregate.
YMD, which also played 19 matches, won 15, drew two and lost two.
Although, Surulere and YMD had the same number of 45 goals in favour, Surulere had 13 goals against while Ojo had 14 against.
Apapa Golden Stars was third on the log with 42 points from 19 matches, won 13, drew three and lost three.
The secretary described the final result of the league as surprising.
“We all expected YMD, which was second in last edition, to top the table this season.
“YMD is a compact team that has continued to improve at every match, so when they were just two points away from the top, everybody had zeroed-in on them as the eventual winners.
“By their pedigree of being able to spring surprises, there is every reason to believe they will top the log,” Aromire said.
According to him, Surulere side is expected to draw their last match which would have given the YMD Babes the chance to top the log.
He said the final result was a surprise to pundits of the three-year-old league that the table was turned against YMD in spite of gaining the three points at the final. (NAN)
