Abuja – The Society of Women Engineers, Technology and Scientists (SWETS) says it plans to educate residents of the Federal Capital Territory on climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation.
The SWETS Chairperson, Mrs Vera Ogwatu, made this known on Thursday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
According to her, the development is part of the SWETS Africa Community Project, with a view to building resilience in the local communities to climate change.
“Also to raise a younger generation with the right attitude and mind-set to promote environmental sustainability and sustainable development.
“ The project consists of the following aspects: enlightenment programme, introduction of alternatives to fuel wood project and Change the Light Bulb campaign (200 to 250 households),“ she said.
Ogwuatu called on Nigerians to commit to combating climate change in every sphere of life and human endeavour.
She suggested positive attitudinal change and practical steps at home and school, “in our offices, business places and community to embrace and promote technologies that combats climate change.’’
According to her, people are experiencing the significant impacts of climate change, which include changing weather events.
“The greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are driving climate change and continue to rise which is now at the highest level in the history.
“Without taking effective action, the world’s average surface temperature is projected to rise over the 21st century with some of the world expected to warm even more.
“ The poorest and most vulnerable people are being affected the most,“ she said. (NAN)
