Cornelius, who resides at No. 13, Ajara Dokoh, Badagry, Lagos State, is facing a charge of stealing before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court.
The prosecutor, Insp. Innocent Uko, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 4, at Ajara Dokoh Shopping Complex in Badagry.
Uko said that the accused stole the item from one Barbara Akpabio.
“The accused pretended that he wanted to buy a can of milk and while the shop owner was helping him to get it, the accused took the carton of Cerelac baby food and ran away.
“The owner of the shop pleaded for help from a passer-by who chased the accused and caught him,” he said.
Uko said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence and his counsel, Mr Obinna Obiora, pleaded with the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.
Chief Magistrate Abiodun Etti granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50,000 and a surety who must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till April 3, for further hearing. (NAN)
