LAGOS – Martins Abamu on Saturday won gold medal in the boys category of the tennis events at the ongoing Lagos State Sport Festival, tagged Ibile Games, by defeating Steven Augustine, 4-1, 5-3.
A total of 25 secondary schools competed for honours in the tennis events, holding at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Yaba.
Augustine of Lafiaji Junior High School, Lagos Island,bagged silver, while Ayoola Micheal, Lafiaji Junior High School and Micheal Osewa of Branded College, Yaba, carted away bronze medal.
In the girls category, Oyindamola Quadri, dislodged Marylove Edwards by 4-0, 4-0 to clinch the gold medal, while Venus Ubiebi won the bronze medal.
The Head Coach, Lagos State Tennis Association (LSTA),Oluwaseyi Steven, told NAN that he was impressed with the performances of the various players and the standard of play.
“Indeed, I am happy about the results today, There is no doubt in my mind that these youngsters proved their worth on the courts.
“I believe they are ready for the DAWN Games (South-West Games for Secondary Schools) coming up later in the month and I know they will make Lagos State proud.
“They have not only shown that they are capable, but have also proven that their level of performance is on the increase,’’ he said.
Champions had been declared in the following concluded sports — Tennis, Ayo, Basketball, Kokowa (Traditional Wrestling ), Weightlifting , Para-Powerlifting, Squash, Gymnastics and Dart.
The games which started on Wednesday will end on May 11. (NAN)
