Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Tension is building in Kano state as the ongoing dispute over the emirship takes a new turn. Both rival emirs plan to hold the 2025 Sallah Durbar celebration.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf recently instructed monarchs to prepare for the Durbar. Shortly after this announcement, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero sent an official letter to Kano police, stating his plans to host the traditional event during Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
Bayero’s letter stated: “The purpose of this letter is to formally notify the security agencies in Kano State, particularly the police force, that this year’s Sallah events coincided with five years of His Highness on the throne of his forefathers, with the assurance that all activities will be conducted peacefully.”
The conflict began in 2020 when Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi was removed as the 14th Emir of Kano through legal proceedings, and Bayero was appointed in his place. In 2024, however, the law was changed, and the state government reinstated Sanusi. Bayero has refused to accept his removal and continues to hold court from the Nasarawa mini-palace.
Neither the state government nor Sanusi has responded to Bayero’s letter yet. The Durbar celebration is just days away, and local residents are worried about potential conflict.
