Abuja – A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Wednesday sentenced a labourer, Kephas Haruna, to six months imprisonment for stealing two wooden doors.
Haruna , 25, of Sun City Estate, Abuja, was arraigned on a one-count charge of theft.
The judge, Gambo Garba, who gave the sentence after Haruna pleaded guilty to the offence and begged for leniency, however, gave him an option of N10,000 fine.
Garba nevertheless ordered that the convict be given 12 strokes of the cane while warning him to desist from further committing crime.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Paul Anigbo, told the court that one Kephas Ripgoro, a security guard in Sun City Estate, reported the matter at Lugbe Police Station on Aug. 6.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
Anigbo said that the convict was caught by Ripgoro inside the estate with two wooden doors suspected to be stolen.
He said Ripgoro arrested the convict and handed him over to the police for proper investigation.
The prosecutor said that during police interrogation, the convict admitted that he stole the doors from one Mr Chukwu Chukwu of House 21, Usaka Street, Sun City Estate.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
