The police in Akwa Ibom have made preparations ahead of the planned protests on October 1.
The police command stated it is ready to handle any potential unrest from the protest.
Timfon John, the spokesperson for the police, addressed the upcoming protest in the state and other parts of Nigeria. She said that the State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, has deployed officers to key locations to prevent the protest from taking place or to ensure it remains peaceful if it does occur.
Timfon assured the public that security measures have been put in place to protect citizens, urging people to continue their daily activities without fear. She said, “The Commissioner of Police has made necessary deployments, and by the grace of God, there will be no protest in Akwa Ibom. If there is, it will be peaceful, and we are making sure hoodlums do not hijack it to create violence and disrupt the state’s peace.”
She emphasized that the police are “battle ready” and security is tight, unlike during previous protests. The planned protest, known as #FearlessInOctober1, follows the #Endbadgovernance protests held in several states from August 1 to 10.
