A tragic gas explosion in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, claimed the lives of three individuals on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred when a 50kg Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cylinder exploded at the frontage of a row of shops along the Abule Pan area of Lekki-Epe Expressway.
The explosion, which happened around 3:34 pm, startled residents as a loud bang echoed through the area, followed by flames engulfing the surroundings, sparking panic among the locals.
Margaret Adeseye, the Director/CEO of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, confirmed in a statement that the explosion involved a 50kg LNG cylinder installed at the front of the shops. She noted that the Lekki Phase II Fire Station, alongside various emergency response agencies including Health Environment officials, military personnel, Federal Road Safety Corps officials, and the Ibeju Lekki Local Government, swiftly responded to contain the inferno.
Adeseye suggested that mishandling of the gas cylinder might have triggered the explosion, and she confirmed the recovery of three bodies from the scene, with another individual sustaining injuries.
