President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for approving the state of emergency in Rivers State, describing the decision as essential for restoring stability after months of political unrest.
He emphasized that the intervention was necessary to address the governance breakdown, which had posed risks to both the state and the country’s economic stability. Tinubu specifically acknowledged Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for setting aside political differences to prioritize the welfare and security of Rivers residents.
According to him, security assessments confirmed the urgency of the situation, making swift action necessary to prevent further escalation. He explained that the crisis had reached a critical point, threatening key oil and gas infrastructure and slowing down economic reforms initiated since his administration took office in May 2023.
In his March 18 national address, Tinubu had stated that the near-collapse of governance in Rivers, along with increasing tensions and threats to federal assets, left no alternative but to act decisively.
The six-month emergency rule grants the appointed Sole Administrator the authority to stabilize the state, resolve governance challenges, and encourage dialogue among conflicting political factions.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to peace, economic recovery, and national development, Tinubu expressed confidence that the National Assembly’s decision demonstrated what could be achieved when leaders work together with unity and responsibility.
He also urged Nigerians to support efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace in Rivers State.
