Tinubu’s Minister gets new appointment

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been appointed Vice Chairman of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the year 2025.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, following his nomination and endorsement by President Bola Tinubu.

The ITU Council, composed of 48 member countries, serves as the decision-making body of the United Nations agency responsible for global telecommunications and digital technology regulation.

This marks the first time in nearly 50 years that Nigeria will hold a leadership role within the ITU Council.

Dr. Tijani’s appointment gives Nigeria an influential voice in global policy discussions on topics such as internet accessibility, digital safety, and inclusion.

In his new role, he will help shape global strategies related to digital infrastructure and equitable access to technology.

Tijani noted that Nigeria’s priorities at the Council will include strengthening digital infrastructure, improving connectivity in underserved regions, and enhancing digital literacy among young people, all aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He is also expected to promote international collaboration on closing the digital divide while advancing Nigeria’s vision for a more inclusive and secure online environment.

Meanwhile, the ITU Secretary-General stressed the urgent need for the Council to tackle global connectivity challenges, especially as 2.6 billion people worldwide still lack internet access.
