Abuja  –   Edmond Ajoge, Managing Director, Tombim Nigeria Ltd and organiser of Tombim Abuja Open Tennis Tournament, has expressed regret that Nigerians at the tournament performed below expectations.

Ajoge told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja at the end of the one week competition that Nigerians crashed out in the second round of the event.

He said that the players had not played well compared to their counterparts from other countries since the maiden edition three years ago.

Ajoge, however, cited lack of competitions as the main cause of the poor performance.

“This is the reason why we have decided to host this game which is in its third edition.

“Our players are not doing well, their performance is low and it’s due to lack of competitions but we hope that with time it will change,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) sanctioned tournament which held at the National Stadium, Abuja, from May 1 to May 6, had over 50 players.

Players also garnered Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) points.

NAN also reports that Canada’s Brayden Schnur, ranked 306 in the world defeated Fabiano de Paula of Brazil to win the event, clinching 35 ATP points on Saturday.
