Abuja – Number three seed Antal Van-Der-Duim of Netherlands on Friday in Abuja sent crashing the tournament’s top seed, Perez Sanz of Spain, 7-6(3), 6-3 at the 2016 Tombim Abuja Tennis Open.
In the ITF Men’s Singles Circuit holding at the Tennis Centre of the National Stadium, the Dutch had it tough in the opening set.
But he steadied his game in the second set to brush aside the top seed and go on to meet in Saturday’s final Mohammed Safwat from Egypt.
The Egyptian and tournament second seed beat Nicolas Meister of the U.S. 6-4, 6-4 in the other semi-final to advance to the final match.
Safwat, after his match, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that he was taking one game at a time.
He however said he prayed that he should win the competition because that was the purpose of his coming to Nigeria.
“I will take each match as it comes and I pray I emerge winner at the end of the event,’’ the Egyptian said.
NAN reports that in the doubles event of the tournament, the pair of Meister and Sanz defeated the pair of Hempel Lenny and Simeon Rosseir 6-4, 6-2 to qualify for the final.
In the other semi-final, Safwat paired Karim-Mohammed Maamoun to beat the pair of Alexander Igoshin and Yan Sabanin in two straight sets of 6-1, 6-3.
The tournament which began on April 16 is scheduled to end on April 30.(NAN)
