Lagos (Lagos State)- A trader, Sodiq Adewale, 32, appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday charged with stealing stock fish worth N850,000.
Adewale, who resides at No. 34, Adebola St., Surulere, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining under false pretence.
The prosecutor, Cpl Gbenga Salami, told the court that the offences were committed on Oct. 16, 2013, at Aguda, Surulere in Lagos.
He said that the accused collected stock fish worth N850,000 from his friend, Mr Oludare Ajayi, and promised to pay later.
Salami said the accused refused to pay the complainant and fraudulently converted the money to his personal use.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 285 stipulates a three-year sentence for stealing while Section 312 (3) provides that any person who obtains money under false pretence is liable to 15 years imprisonment.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Ojuromi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said the sureties must show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government, and adjourned the case to Jan.19, 2015, for hearing. (NAN)
