Igbere (Abia) -A traditional ruler in Abia, Eze Joseph Ukoha-Anyanta, has appealed to the Federal Government to approve the reintroduction of teaching of History in primary and secondary schools across the country.
He said that reintroduction of the subject would boost the cultural reorientation programme and the “Change Agenda” of the present administration.
Ukoha-Anyanta, who is the traditional ruler of Ibinaukwu Autonomous Community in Bende Local Government Area, made the call on Saturday at Igbere during the celebration of the community’s 2016 New Yam Festival.
Recalling how traders from Ibinaukwu brought yam to Igbere many years ago, the traditional said that without the study of history, youths of today would not know about the exploits of their forebears.
“ History is very important to enable a people know their past, and learn from the mistakes of the past in order to move forward.’’
He stressed the need for peace in the community, adding that without peace “ Ibinaukwu cannot maintain its leadership position in Igbere’’.
He commended Ibinaukwu women who returned for the 2016 August Meeting for attending the ceremony.
Ukoha-Anyanta commended Ibinaukwu women, who were all present at the ceremony, for their annual “August Meeting” toward the development of the community, and urged them not to relent.
A community leader, Mr Thomas Ibekwe, who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), stressed the need to document the history of the community.
Ibekwe said that documenting the activities of the past would help to put records straight.
He said that the large turnout at the festival was a demonstration of the popularity of the traditional ruler. (NAN)
