Abuja – Consistent training and attendance of international competitions will help Nigerian gymnasts get opportunities to appear and win medals at Olympic Games, a gymnastics coach, Tony Asuquo, said on Sunday.
The coach told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that early preparations would also help put the country ahead of others when competitions come up.
Asuquo, who is also the proprietor of Tony International Gymnastics Club of Abuja, said raising gymnasts from age three would help them imbibe the necessary skills needed to excel in gymnastics.
“To compete favourably at the Olympics, we have to start from the scratch.
“We have to train the kids early, and take them to international competitions as well.
“Gymnastics can bring Nigeria over 10 medals at the Olympics if we begin to harness the talents in this country,’’ he said.
Asuquo, also the first Nigerian to be certified as a Federation International Gymnastics (FIG) coach, called on all stakeholders in the sport to come together to develop the game.
