LAGOS – The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James Entwistle, on Wednesday said that his government has not cut off military support for Nigeria in her bid to fight insurgency.
Entwistle, who stated this in Lagos at the Nigeria Leadership Initiative (NLI) Diplomatic Dialogue Series, restated the U.S. government’s support for Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram.
“The U.S. has not cut Nigeria militarily, that is untrue.
“We should, however, know that military solution to the problem of Boko Haram, by itself, cannot be a solution to the problem of insecurity in Nigeria.
“The U.S. has experienced some kind of terrorism, and so defeating terrorism requires much more than the military,’’ he said.
Entwistle also said that the U.S. government had no plan to establish a permanent military base in Nigeria in the future.
The envoy expressed his government’s commitment to having stronger relations with Nigeria.
He urged Nigeria to brace up to her challenges in power and security sectors, as well as ensure good governance and infrastructural development. [eap_ad_1] Enwistle also advised young Nigerians to be active in the development of their country, adding that the future of the country belongs to them.
The NLI’s Executive Director, Mr Yinka Oyinlola, said that it was imperative for Nigeria and America to promote people-to-people relationship.
Oyinlola said that his organisation would continue to work toward a better future for Nigeria through value based leadership.
“We are convinced that people-to-people relationship is valuable and can complement government-to-government relations.
“This is one reason for our Diplomatic Dialogue Series,’’ he said. (NAN)
