WASHINGTON – Gay men could be allowed to give blood in the United States under changes proposed on Wednesday by health authorities.
Commissioner Margaret Hamburg made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday in Washington.
“The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was preparing to recommend a change to the blood donor deferral period for men who have sex with men.
“ From indefinite deferral to one year since the last sexual contact.
“The change would bring the conditions for gay men in line with other donors at increased risk of HIV infection,’’ the FDA statement said.
The FDA was planning to release draft guidance in 2015 recommending the change, followed by a consultation with stakeholders. (dpa/NAN)
