UBTH provides free eye screening to the elderly, introduce e-wallet for payments

The University of Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has provided free medical and free eyes screening check-ups for elderly persons in the state to celebrate older persons.

Prof Darlington Obaseki, Chief Medical Director (CMD), UBTH, disclosed this at an event to commemorate the International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP), on Friday.

Obaseki said that UNIDOP’s theme: “Digital equity for all ages” aimed at increasing the number of older persons who are familiar with e-mobile.

“UBTH has a large number of elderly persons who patronize us, hence we have launched Elderly Friendly Initiative.

“This initiative has helped the elderly by making bolder inscriptions, bigger rest points and also we have instructed our staff to attend to elderly persons first.

“We also have plans to create an app on phones called the E-wallet, which would enable the elderly make easy payments with their phones, whenever they come to the hospital for treatment”, he said.

The CMD, who stressed the for people to maintain healthy lifestyles, said that the event was to teach old people how to on their health, so as to live longer.

He said that the UBTH management has, unfailingly together with the geriatric unit, celebrated Oct 1.

Earlier, the Iyase of Benin, Chief Sam Ogbe, urged elderly persons in the state to go for regular check-ups, because such check-ups help detect, diagnose and manage diseases early.

Ogbe added that was important to go for regular check-ups because of unknown diseases that could suddenly surface.

Dr Emem Omokaro, the Director General, National Senior Citizens’ Centre (NSCC), represented by Prof Obehi Akoria, Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC) advised older persons to always use their face masks, as they could help to curtail the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The UNIDOP is celebrated every Oct. 1, to raise about issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse. is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.
