Kampala – A Ugandan court on Thursday convicted eight men on charges related to twin bombings in Kampala, during the 2010 football World Cup finals that left 76 people dead.
The judge, Alphonse Owiny-Dollo, said during the court session that seven of the men were found guilty of murder, terrorism and attempted murder.
He said another was convicted of helping them, while five others were acquitted.
“They all executed their purpose with determination,” Owiny-Dollo said, adding that the suspects who were subsequently arrested after the attacks and tried in court on Thursday included seven Kenyans, five Ugandans and a Tanzanian.
He said the men would be sentenced on Friday.
“The bombings targeted a rugby club and a restaurant where hundreds of people were watching a football match,’’ he said.
The Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab had earlier claimed responsibility for the bombing. (dpa/NAN)
