Nsukka (Enugu State), – Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has presented a new 48-seater coaster bus and fully-equipped ambulance to the newly established State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno.
In a speech while receiving the vehicles at the institution on Saturday, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. James Ogbonna, expressed gratitude to Ugwuanyi for fulfilling his pledge within one week.
Ogbonna said that the governor had at the maiden matriculation of SUMAS on April 22 promised to give the university the vehicles to enhance its day-to-day operations.
“The governor, who is the Visitor to the university, has again by this gesture demonstrated his love, commitment and desire to ensure rapid development and growth of the university.
“The staff and students are excited and grateful to the governor for this wonderful gifts of a new fully-equipped ambulance and 48-seater bus from the governor through the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Prof. Malachy Okwueze.
“We are grateful to the governor for fulfilling his promises in the shortest possible time.
“We have been enjoying unlimited support and commitment from him,” Ogbonna said.
He promised that the university would put the vehicles to effective use and ensure that the institution remained a centre of excellence.
The vice chancellor disclosed that the university’s teaching hospital and medical centre had been opened to the public for general and specialised medical services.
“The public can now access the services of consultants in Internal Medicine, Paediatric, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology at affordable rates.
“The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory and Radiological equipment for all kinds of laboratory tests, ultrasound services and X-ray, among others,” he said.
The university, founded by Ugwuanyi, was approved by the National Universities Commission on June 2022 as the 219th in the country.
It had its maiden matriculation on the April 22, with 789 pioneer students. (NAN)
