BANGUI – Ahead of upcoming parliamentary polls in Central African Republic (CAR), the UN Peace Building Commission has called on stakeholders to help promote an environment conducive to holding the elections.
The commission said in a statement issued in Bangui that it had taken note of the “commendable progress” to date in the processes of preparation for the elections.

It expressed delight towards the determination and commitment of the international and national stakeholders in implementing the concluding documents of the Bangui Forum.
CAR’s parliamentary elections are slated for July and have sparked hope among many in the international community that they may bring an end to hostilities.
More than two years of civil war and sectarian violence have displaced thousands of people in CAR in ongoing clashes between the mainly Muslim Séléka alliance and anti-Balaka militia, which are mostly Christian.
Meanwhile, the commission acknowledged with concern the existing financial gap of 21 million dollars toward the electoral budget.
It said the financial gap could jeopardise the vital step of disarmament and demobilisation as well as the establishment of a Special Criminal Court.
The commission called on international partners to redouble its efforts in a spirit of solidarity and generosity to support key processes.
It said these include the elections, aimed at ensuring the consolidation of security, democracy and social cohesion. (Reuters/NAN)
