United Nations -UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, on Monday night in New York congratulated Zambia for peaceful elections and called on political leaders to resolve disputes through constitutional means.
Earlier on Monday, incumbent Zambian President, Edgar Lungu, was re-elected amid complaints from opposition political parties of malpractices in the process.
In a statement, Ban reminded charged the country’s political leaders of the need to reject violence and to resolve differences or disputes constitutionally.
Zambians voted in presidential, parliamentary and local government elections on Thursday.
African observers had said that the elections were free, fair and credible, in spite of some minor challenges.
However, Zambia’s main opposition party, the United Party for National Development, has said that it would petition against the results of the presidential election, alleging that they had been tampered with. (Reuters/NAN)
