ABIDJAN – The special representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa, Saïd Djinnit, on Wednesday stressed the importance of collective regional action to face the increasing insecurity threats in the West African sub-region.
According to Djinnit, “there must be collective action taken by West African countries with the support of the international community to face the terrorist activities in the Sahel and in north-east of Nigeria.
“It is important to underline the decisive aspect of stability in Nigeria, in the region and in the continent.’’
An extraordinary summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, held on May 30 in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, had examined the security situation in northern Mali and Nigeria.
The summit had proposed the strengthening of bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation in fighting terrorism. (PANA/NAN)
