The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, is set to embark on a two-day official visit to Nigeria beginning Thursday, January 9, 2025.
During her visit, she will engage in high-level discussions aimed at addressing critical issues of regional stability and development.
According to a statement from the United Nations Information Centre, Ms. Mohammed will meet with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, senior government officials, and key leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). She will also hold consultations with the UN country team in Nigeria.
Accompanying her on this mission will be Leonardo Simão, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, and Mohamed Malick Fall, the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria.
Prior to her visit to Nigeria, Ms. Mohammed will represent UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the inauguration of Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, in Accra. While in Ghana, she is scheduled to meet with the new president and the UN country team to assess the partnership between the United Nations and Ghana.
This visit underscores the UN’s commitment to fostering regional collaboration and supporting sustainable development initiatives across West Africa.
