ABIDJAN – Ms Aichatou Mindaoudou, the Head, UN Operation in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI) has restated the mission’s commitment to sustaining effective security in the country.
Mindaoudou, who is also the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in UNOCI stated this in Abidjan on Tuesday while briefing the media on the activities of the mission.
She said that the UN forces would continue to partner the national security agencies to ensure the security of lives and property across the Ivorian territory.
The UN official said that the mission carried out 2, 722 land and air patrols across the Ivorian territory in the past two weeks.
“We have continued to meet with the national security outfits and the UNIOCI forces to appraise our operations and to determine how best to strengthen our cooperation.
“The UNOCI has also continued to provide training for members of the national forces to boost their capacities,’’ she said.
She urged Ivorians across the country to support the efforts of the mission and the national security agencies by strengthening civil/military cooperation and intelligence gathering.
“Looking at where the country is coming from, it should be the duty of every citizen to support intelligence gathering in order to ensure effective security.
“Security should be the business of every citizen, it is easier to act if the right information is available,’’ she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Cote d’Ivoire was hit by a post-election crisis that was reported to have caused the death of some 3,000 persons.
NAN reports that although calm has returned in the country, there are still pockets of crime and violence in some parts, especially in the northern region.(NAN)
