Unemployed man arraigned over assault on soldier

LAGOS – An unemployed man, Tayo Ajayi, who allegedly beat up a soldier, was on Wednesday brought before an Oshodi Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Ajayi, 19, whose address was not provided, is facing charges of conspiracy and assault.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, said that the accused committed the offences on Dec.17 at Oshodi, Lagos.
He said that the accused and others still at large conspired to assault one Sgt. Rabiu Awalu of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri.
“The accused beat up the complainant and inflicted injury on him,” the prosecutor said.
Olatunde said that the complainant was under a bridge at Oshodi when he saw some area boys with cutlasses pursing a fellow soldier.
“He stopped them and tried to find out what happened; he collected their cutlasses in order to prevent them from harming the soldier, but when their prey escaped, the miscreants transferred their aggression on him.
“They descended on him and inflicted injuries on him and only took to their heels when they saw blood gushing out of his body.
“Some passersby pursued the miscreants, but were only able to arrest the accused while the others escaped,” Olatunde said.
The prosecutor said that the accused and his accomplices also dispossessed Awalu of a mobile phone worth N25,000.
The offences, Olatunde said, contravened Sections 171 and 410 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 171 prescribes a three-year jail term as penalty for assault occasioning harm.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The magistrate, Mr O.L. Owolabi granted the accused N50,000 bail with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till Jan.19 for mention.(NAN)
