Lagos -An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced a 46-year-old man, Ayo Fagbemi, to six months imprisonment for stealing some passengers’ goods at the Murtatal Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Layinka, sentenced Fagbemi to six months imprisonment, without an option of a fine.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict, who was arraigned on June 26 on a three-count charge bordering on stealing, had pleaded guilty to the charge.
“The accused is hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment, without an option of fine. It will serve as a deterrent to others,’’ Layinka ruled.
The convict, who is an unemployed man, lives at 12, Dabori St., Ejigbo, a suburb of Lagos.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi, told the court that the offences were committed on June 17, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Perezi said that the convict went inside one of the conveyor belts at the Airport, removed some luggage and stole valuables belonging to some passengers.
“Some of the items stolen were cell phones, clothes, shoes, jewellery and perfumes.
“The chief security officer noticed a suspicious movement and mobilised his men to be at the two escape routes of the airport.
“The accused was apprehended,’’ he said.
The offences contravened Sections 3(2)(b) and 285 of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria(FAAN) Bye Laws, 2005. (NAN)
