Abuja – The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) has urged the Federal Government to redeem all its pledges to development partners, to enhance the life of its citizenry.
Ms Ratidzai Ndhlovu, the Country Representative of the UNFPA, made the call when she featured at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) forum on Wednesday in Abuja.
“During the Family Planning Conference in London, Nigeria made a pledge of eight million dollars around family planning.
“The majority of the countries that made pledges during the planning summit in London, have already paid or honoured their commitments or their pledges but here in Nigeria we still have not done so.
“So I plead with government to please honor that pledge because it is becoming very embarrassing we have to find ways.
“I do appreciate that our government is currently facing a lot of challenges which we all know with the drop in oil price.”
Ndhlovu said there were a lot partners working on sexual and reproductive health, family planning and fistula elimination.
According to her, what these partners bring on the table cannot cover Nigeria.
She said that development partners were encouraged to do more when they
see government make contributions.
She urged the Federal Government to show commitment by redeeming, at
least, a part of the pledge.
She commended the Minister of Health for redeeming some other pending
pledges to development partners.(NAN)
