ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – The Regional Representative of the UN Refugee Agency for West Africa begins an official visit to Nigeria from May 20 – 29.
According to a statement sent to Sundiata Post, it is Mrs Liz Ahua’s first ever visit to Nigeria since she assumed functions as the UNHCR Regional Representative in February. It is also the first visit since the UN Agency declared a level 2 emergency for the Nigeria Situation emergency response on February 13 caused by the displacement crises resulting from the insurgency in North east and affecting Nigeria and neighbouring countries; Cameroon, Chad, and the Republic of Niger.
During the visit, she is scheduled to meet with sister UN agencies, donor organisations and government agencies. She will also meet officials of the ECOWAS Commission.

The Regional Representative will also visit the UNHCR Sub Office in Bauchi and the field office in Lagos. She will meet with staff of the offices, the humanitarian community in Bauchi, and IDP locations and a school attended predominantly by IDP children in the Bauchi metropolis.
She will take time off to pay courtesy calls on the Bauchi State Governor, the Speaker of the BHSHA, and the Emir of Bauchi.
The focus of her discussions with the various stakeholders will certainly be on the displacement crises in the country and to assess how the UNHCR can better strengthen its intervention.
Liz Kpam Ahua is also the Regional Coordinator of the Central African Republic refugee situation. She has held many positions within the UNHCR hierarchy including that of Deputy Director for the Regional Bureau for Africa at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, where she oversaw UNHCR operations in West Africa and Central Africa & The Great Lakes.
