The University of Abuja has named Prof. Aisha Maikudi as its new Vice-Chancellor, a decision surrounded by protests and disagreements.
This was revealed in a statement by the institution’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Habib Yakoob, on Tuesday.
The appointment process faced criticism, with stakeholders accusing the governing council of favoring Maikudi despite claims that she lacked the required years of experience for the role. The controversy also created divisions within the council, with some members boycotting meetings related to the selection.
According to the statement, the Governing Council, led by Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), approved Maikudi’s appointment during its 77th Extraordinary Meeting on December 31, 2024.
Maikudi, who emerged as the top candidate among 10 shortlisted for the position, was selected by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board. Her tenure, which is set to begin on January 1, 2025, will span five years and is nonrenewable.
The statement emphasized that the selection process adhered to the regulations governing such appointments.
