Abuja – The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) on Monday in Abuja promised to support Nigeria in the area of quality infrastructure.
Mrs Abimbola Uzomah, UNIDO’s Lead National Expert for Component Quality Infrastructure, stated this when she paid a courtesy visit to Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu.
According to her, for UNIDO to fulfil its plan for Nigeria, a working group from different institutions, ministries, departments and agencies that have relevance to technical regulations was constituted.
“This people have been working on technical regulations in Nigeria.
“We have done a review on technical regulations of different agencies and ministries in Nigeria and we have been able to look at why we have some lapses in our quality infrastructure.
“We have done a drafting of the policy to be able to put the infrastructure in proper perspective, “ she said.
She said that the team had gone round the six geo-political zones of Nigeria to disseminate the policy and they had also done the validation.
She said the purpose of the visit was to advocate to the respective ministries regarding their relevance in respect to technical regulations in Nigeria.
“So that as the project is progressing, Ministry of Science and Technology would see their relevance and begin to make impact and input in the quality infrastructure in Nigeria.
Responding, the minister commended UNIDO for its efforts to advance Nigeria in various sectors of the economy, including quality infrastructure for Nigeria.
Onu explained that such assistant would complement the effort being made by the ministry and its agencies.
“We are happy we are working on high quality infrastructure for our nation, the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology is committed to making sure we attain that goal.
“For example, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute[NIBRRI]I works on our roads and housing, designs, construction and the maintenance of our roads in particular,“ he said.
