Lagos – The vice-chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Rahamon Bello, on Friday called for funding of research projects and encouragement of researchers toward proffering solutions to Nigeria’s societal challenges.
Bello made the call at the closing ceremony of the 10th University of Lagos Annual Research Conference and Fair in Lagos.
“We must seek to prioritise research activities in our tertiary institutions because it is one sure way of contributing to human existence.
“We hope to put into full use the outcome of research findings of this conference and fair for the advancement of humanity and the nation.
“This university in particular has love for research and that is why I am hoping to see a digitalised conference and fair when next we gather here,’’ the vice-chancellor said.
Also speaking, Mr Casmier Ekwerike, a doctorate degree student at the Faculty of Education of UNILAG, urged government to provide enough funding for researchers.
Ekwerike also urged those in-charge of the funds to make the process of accessing it less rigorous for the beneficiaries.
He said that the country was faced with a peculiar problem which had to do with the poor interest in research by government.
According to him, researchers are not encouraged as they feel that institutions do not make use of their research findings.
Commenting on the research conference, he described it as a worthwhile experience, being in a community that appreciates research.
“I am personally encouraged and elated being a participant at this fair. Unilag must sustain this culture.
“I learnt a lot here and I challenged myself that with what I have seen here today, come next time, I will present my own research findings,’’ he said.
