Mr Kunle Akogun, Head of Corporate Affairs of the institution, in a statement, said that the first phase of the oil palm plantation would be flagged off by the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on May 15.
According to him, the oil palm plantation will enhance the institution’s mandate of teaching, research and community service.
“The project will provide training and laboratory facilities for students in the Faculties of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, as well as the Departments of Forestry, Plant Biology and other related disciplines.” he added.
Akogun also said that at maturation, the plantation would be a good source of internally generated revenue for the university.
He said that high breed oil palm seedlings had been purchased from the National Institute for Oil-Palm Research (NIFOR), Benin City, in Edo.
He said that this was to ensure the smooth take-off and ultimate success of the project.
He said PC tablets would be distributed to all the 100 Level students of the institution on Thursday.
Akogun said that the distribution of the PC tablets was the initiative of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, aimed at enhancing learning.(NAN)
