Sokoto-The Sokoto State Chairman of the Agricultural and Allied Workers Union of Nigeria ( AAWUN), Alhaji Abubakar Malami, has advocated for the establishment of a Special Agricultural Trust Fund in the country.
Malami made the suggestion in Sokoto on Saturday when he addressed newsmen on ways to boost food production in Nigeria.
“The proposed fund will surely help in facilitating the revival of the all-important agricultural sector in the country.
” This sector which was the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy was largely neglected after the discovery of oil.
” The earlier this ugly trend is reversed, the better for the Nigerian economy and its citizens, ” he said.
According to him, the fund should be mandated to partner with related agencies to provide adequate funding for the agricultural sector.
He said that its focus should be in the provision of adequate and affordable inputs, implements and soft loans to farmers in the country.
The union leader stressed that the gesture would encourage food production and food security..
”It will boost the nation’s food security, as well as its economy, with the potentials of bolstering the country’s foreign reserve,” Malami added. ( NAN)
