UNN inducts 69 medical doctors




Enugu  –  Sixty-nine medical students of the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, were on Monday inducted as medical doctors.
Performing the ceremony in Enugu, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Uche Nwagha, said that the graduates passed through `acid test’ before overcoming the challenges.
He extolled the management for providing an enabling environment for the graduates to attain their academic goals.
The dean urged all tiers of government; parents and corporate bodies to support the college financially to enable it upgrade deteriorating facilities in the college.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, represented by his deputy, Dr Edith Nwosu, congratulated the new medical doctors for their perseverance and urged them never to put the college to shame.
She described the UNN College of Medicine as the `best in Africa’ and encouraged the graduates never to forget the college that nurtured them.
In a remark, the Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Enugu Chapter, Dr George Ugwu, appealed to health institutions to accept the doctors for their one year house jobs.
Ugwu regretted that many doctors roam the streets in search of a place to do their house jobs, describing it as `unfortunate.’
In a paper entitled `Practicing Medicine in Modern Times, the Challenges,’ the Commissioner for Health in Anambra, Dr Joe Akabuike said that medical doctors faced many challenges in Nigeria.
The commissioner listed some of the challenges to include lack of medical facilities and emergence of new diseases and how to deal with them.
He admonished them to perform their duties with diligence, commitment and utmost confidentiality to avoid risking the revocation of their practicing license.

Some of the new medical doctors who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) expressed delight that they qualified as medical doctors.
Dr Chisom Okeke expressed joy over the induction, but called on government to provide jobs for Nigerian graduates.
