The Sokoto State Deputy Governor and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Mukhtar Shagari, yesterday said God chose President Goodluck Jonathan to lead Nigeria and advised unscrupulous politicians in the North to stop using religion to incite people against the President.
Shagari made the remark yesterday, shortly after presenting six vehicles and 244 motorcycles to party officials in Sokoto. He maintained that it was God’s wish that Jonathan emerged the nation’s president and as such those selfish politicians using religion against him were wasting their time.
He noted with dismay that such selfish politicians were fond of quoting verses of the Holy Quran during rallies and political activities in order to incite people against Jonathan.
Shagari posited that politics was all about development and social transformation and has nothing to do with religion. He stated that the people of Sokoto would vote for Jonathan in the 2015 election and would not be deceived by such charlatans using religion to create division among the people.
“It is only God that gives power to whoever He wishes and has chosen Jonathan as the President of Nigeria. “It is sad that some unscrupulous politicians are playing politics of religion in the North and are fond of quoting the verses of Quran during political activities in order to deceive people and create hatred against the President. He expressed concern at the level of deprivation and poverty ravishing the people of the state.
Shagari pledged that the PDP was determined to curb poverty in the state, if given the mandate come 2015. He said that the Toyota cars and motorcycles donated to some party officials and 244 ward chairmen in the state, were meant to enable them move around in rural areas.
He charged PDP officials in the state to redouble efforts towards mobilising the people at the grassroot ahead of 2015 elections. Shagari advised youths in the state to shun political thuggery and keep away from politicians who want to use them to create chaos. (Thisday)
