The Vatican has announced that the election of a new Pope will take place on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

In a brief statement issued on Monday, April 28, the Vatican confirmed that the Papal Conclave will officially commence on that date, following the traditions of the Catholic Church. The Conclave is the gathering of cardinals tasked with electing a new Pope after the death or resignation of the previous Pontiff.

The election process, which has its roots in the early history of the Church, involves a strict and secluded procedure, ensuring confidentiality during the voting.

This Conclave comes just days after the funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 following a prolonged illness.

According to the Vatican’s statement, all cardinals will be present in Rome to participate in the decision-making process at the fifth General Congregation.

“The conclave to elect a new Pope will begin on May 7,” the Holy See Press Office announced. “The Cardinals currently in Rome agreed on the date during their fifth General Congregation.”

The election will take place within the Sistine Chapel, which will remain closed to visitors throughout the duration of the Conclave.
