Victims protest Long Adjournment Of Case Against Enugu ‘Wonder Bank’ MD, Wife

There was a mild drama at the Federal High Court, Enugu on Monday March as some depositors of funds running into Billions of naira with an Enugu-based ‘Wonder Bank’, “Lets Partner With You” protested what they considered a long adjournment of the case involving the operator of the company, Patrick Shanchi Nwokike, his wife Rosemary Ifeoma Nwokike.

Justice Dugbo R. O. Oghoghorie had adjourned the case to May 17,2017 for trial, a development which provoked a protest by some victims.

They quickly laid siege around the defendant’s vehicles threatening to deal with him and demanding a speedy trial of the case.

It took a speedy intervention of security operatives to restore normalcy.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC had on Tuesday November 15, 2016, arraigned the trio on a four- count charge bothering on Advanced Fee Fraud and carrying out banking business without valid License, an offence which runs contrary to the provisions of SECTION 2(1) of the Bank and Other Financial Institutions Act and the case adjourned to March 6,2017.

When the case was earlier called up, the Prosecution team led by M. U. Onome told the court they were ready for trial, with the witness in the court.

Counsel to the 1st accused counsel, G. C Igbokwe, however, informed the court that he was just briefed and was unable to go on with the case, a position not challenged by Counsel to the 2nd and 3rd accused persons; Peter Eze and A.N Ani (SAN) respectively.

Reacting to the development, which he said was aimed at delaying the trial, Onome wondered why even with a four-month interregnum from the last adjourned date, the defence could not put its house in order.

“My Lord, the defence had long been served since November last year with proof of evidence and even, the additional statement of the witness who is in court today was served to the defence since 24th February, 2017″, he said.

It would be recalled that the EFCC had on Thursday October 6, 2016 arrested the Managing Director of “Lets Partner With You Ltd” Chief. Patrick Shanchi Nwokike and his wife Rosemary Ifeoma Nwokike at his residence in Enugu, following several petitions by innocent Nigerians who fell prey to his baits of financial gains on invested capitals.

One of the charges against the accused persons reads: “That you, LETS PARTNER WITH YOU LTD, PATRICK SHANCHI NWOKIKE (Managing Director/CEO of LETS PARTNER WITH YOU LTD) and ROSEMARY IJEOMA NWOKIKE (Director of LETS PARTNER WITH YOU LTD) sometimes between 2015 and 2016 at Enugu within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria Knowingly consented to the carrying on of banking business without valid license by the company and thereby committed an offence contrary to SECTION 2 (1) and 49 (1) of the BANKS AND OTHER FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS ACT, CAP B3, LAWS OF THE FEDERATION, 2004 and punishable under SECTION 2(2) of the same Act.”
