Abuja -Mr Durojaye Olalekan, Principal Road Traffic Officer, Directorate of Road Traffic Services, has road users to maintain good road use culture in order to prevent accidents on the roads.
Olalekan made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.
“The problem we have most of the time concerning our roads has to do with poor compliance to traffic regulations.
“People do not want to obey instructions, especially when it pertains to the roads.
“Adherence to regulations and doing the right thing is the main problem in Nigeria. The leaders and citizens must come to terms to what is right”, he told NAN.

According to him drivers more often than not exceed the speed limits or ignore high way codes.
“For instance, where highway codes set a speed limit at 120km, you find people speeding at 160km.
“The pedestrian bridges are there for them but people don’t use it; nobody wants to stop at bus stops because we wait for a vehicle at any point on the road.
“So when the enforcement officers want to ensure that people use the road the way it should be used by arresting people, they see us in bad light, these are the issues”, he said.
Olalekan advised the government to ensure that roads were constructed and maintained according to global best practises.
“The designers of roads should produce designs that would mean fewer accidents on our roads”, he said. (NAN)
