ABUJA – The West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP-Nigeria) on Thursday said it would soon distribute certified seeds to farmers in Zaria, Kaduna State.
The National Project Coordinator of WAAPP-Nigeria, Prof. Damian Chikwendu, made the disclosure in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja.
The statement said the seeds to be distributed were produced in collaboration with agricultural research institutes in the country.
“The West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP-Nigeria) will be holding a one-day seed sensitisation forum in Zaria.
“During the forum, certified seeds produced through collaboration between WAAPP and some agricultural research institutes in the country will be distributed to farmers and other WAAPP stakeholders,’’ it said.
According to the statement, the forum would hold on June 19 at the Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR), Zaria by 10 a.m.
The dignitaries expected at the event include the Executive Secretary, Agricultural Research Institute, Prof. B. Y. Abubakar and the National Project Coordinator of WAAPP-Nigeria, Prof. Damian Chikwendu.
Seed Specialists and other stakeholders in the Seed Implementation Value Chain from across the country are also expected.
The West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP) is a World Bank-assisted programme under the auspices of the member countries of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The objective of the project is to improve agricultural productivity in the ECOWAS countries.
It will also encourage integrated development of agricultural research in order to generate innovations and promote their diffusion throughout the sub-region. (NAN)
