Lagos  –  In a bid to encourage female footballers at the grassroots, the Women Amateur Football Association (WAFA) is to stage the maiden edition of Queens Golden Cup championship in Lagos.

Olajide Royal, the Association Secretary, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos that the event would hold from Nov. 24 to Dec. 5 at Emmanuel Primary School in Ojota.

Royal said that the championship, which would feature eight teams, would be held in continuation of WAFA’s effort in promoting female football in the country.

“WAFA is all about female football and that is why we have decided to come up with this competition in order to actively engage young talented girls in the sport.

“Most football competitions in the country are mainly organised for boys without consideration for the opposite sex and this has created a huge gap.

“We have done the fixtures and we are running round the clock to ensure that the championship is hitch free,” he said.

The secretary urged participants to take advantage of the event to showcase their talent in football.

Royal also appealed to corporate bodies and philanthropists to make the championship a success by supporting WAFA. (NAN)
