ABUJA – Mr Martin Eduvie, the Coordinator, National Water Research Institute (NWRI), Kaduna, said on Thursday the institute had the capacity to train Nigerians on how to drill standard boreholes and control flooding.
Eduvie disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
He said NWRI was established to address issues of capacity building in Nigeria’s water sector.
“The National Institute is the only parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources that addresses the issue of capacity building; all we do is training and research in all sectors of water resources.
“We take care of the rural, semi-urban and of course, the urban areas in terms of their capacity building, in terms of the various training right from the skills acquisition level to the highest level in particular.“
The coordinator added that the institute had trained personnel in the water sector to improve access to potable water in the rural areas. [eap_ad_1] He spoke of the need for persons involved in water business to improve their knowledge to meet global standard.
He said, “You know very well that even if you have all the money and all the materials and no people to manage it, then of course the system will not work.
“If you look at all the various water boards, the people that operate there are human beings, they need to be updated in terms of the capacity building.
“They need to also have a lot of latest techniques in terms of how they can do things better.
“At rural areas the various aspect of drilling so many boreholes that are being abortive, how do you ensure that you don’t have abortive boreholes – through training, through capacity building.
“Even at managerial level you still need a lot of capacity to be able to train people very well so that they can manage well for the efficient water supply in the country.“ (NAN)
