Abuja – The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), on Thursday stated that it does not charge money for application forms and recruitment.
Mr Wale Adeniyi, spokesman for the service, gave this explanation when showed one Samuel Eromosele, to newsmen at the Nigeria Army Headquarter in Abuja for posing as “Internet Customs, Army recruitment official.’’
Adeniyi advised applicants not to become victims of online fraudsters in their bid to gain employment into the service.
“Customs is stressing that we don’t charge money for applications and we will never call for applications through any of the social media.’’
He advised the public to be on red alert once they see advert on recruitment, obtaining application forms and auctioning of vehicles online.
“They should know that something is fishing because when you are asked to pay money to join any Federal Government organisation, you should know it is a fake”, he said.
Adebiyi saluted the rapid response the Nigeria Army Corps Military Police gave the cybercrime.
“It shows that the likes of Eromosele can run for a short time but cannot hide forever’’, he said.
He said security agencies experienced similar cybercrimes and called for stronger collaboration among them to combat the scourge.
“This is a test case for collaboration and dividend of collaboration. From all indications, we collaborate effectively because crime against one is crime against all.
“We apprehended five cyber fraudsters in June, all from Edo State.’’
He said that with the collaboration of some banks, customs was able to arrest these fraudsters who specialised in using recruitment to extort money from the public.
“They have been arraigned and granted bail. Prosecution will take its course.’’
Adeniyi said it had been difficult for the fraudsters to hack into customs account since the NCS opened a Facebook account. (NAN)
