Kaduna, – Priscilla Ankut, Executive Vice Chairman, Kaduna State Peace Commission, says the commission is set to put all mechanisms in place to end the legacies of violence in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ankut gave the assurance on Tuesday in Kaduna at a stakeholders meeting called to review the commission’s strategic plan for 2018-2022.
“It is time to move the state forward to where peace and harmony become the order of the day,” she stressed.
According to her, the peace commission has in the past five months consulted various stakeholders for inputs on ways to ensure lasting peace in the state.
“We have been trying to solicit for inputs and ideas on how to end a legacy of strife in the state.
“We are trying to put a solid plan that would ensure that we work with the whole of society to build a peaceful Kaduna state where meaningful development can occur.”
She explained that the meeting of stakeholders was to validate the commission’s work plan which was put together from inputs generated from the various stakeholders.
“We have analyzed contributions from stakeholders, and all the ideas put together to key priority areas of action.
“The meeting is therefore to affirm that we are indeed reflecting the views of stakeholders in terms of going forward in building sustainable peace infrastructure in Kaduna state,” the official stressed.
A consultant to the commission, Mr George Mukundi, explained that the vision of the commission was to create peaceful and inclusive state based on mutual respect for diversity among all the inhabitants.
He added that the commission was focused on conflict prevention, mitigation and resolution.
Speaking to newsmen on the sideline, the State Secretary of Christian Association of Nigeria, Mr Sunday Ibrahim expressed support of the work of the peace commission.
According to him, peace building is essential in any society that desires development.
Also, the state Secretary of Jama’atul Nasrul Islam, Malam Ibrahim Kufaina described the initiative as good, saying it would allow for genuine interaction and addressing issues militating against peaceful coexistence in the state.
“It is an important avenue to ensure lasting peace in Kaduna state, peace is very vital for any important development to happen in any society,” he said.
NAN reports that the the stakeholders meeting would endorse the five year multi-disciplinary peace strategic document to tackle the main drivers of violent conflicts in the state.
The document provides among others, the strengthening of the capacity of peace architecture in the state to effectively prevent, mitigate and resolve conflicts.
It will also facilitate effective, functional and responsive conflict prevention mechanism which would ensure timely and coordinated mitigation and resolution of violent conflicts.
