Minna – Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger on Sunday reaffirmed the state government’s determination to reposition the health sector for optimal performance.
Bello stated this in Minna while inaugurating the 2016 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger Council with “Health Reportage: A Panacea for Effective Public Health Delivery System’’ as theme.
“We will ensure the provision of state-of-the-art facilities to provide qualitative health care delivery in all public health institutions.
“We have already declared a state-of-emergency in the state health sector in our resolve to provide needed manpower and modern health facilities to take care of the health of our people irrespective of political differences.
“Our administration is a responsible government that is concerned about the yearnings and aspirations of our people through good governance.
“We are committing over N 2 billion on the rehabilitation of Minna, Kontagora and Suleja general hospitals,’’ he said.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Mustapha Jibril, said that the government would continue to partner NUJ to mobilize residents’ support for government’s policies and programmes.
The Guest Speaker at the occasion, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, said that health reporting empowered people with information on how to engage in health friendly practices and why they should do so.
Aliyu, who is the Head of Department of Mass Communication, Lami Fati Abubakar College of Legal and Islamic Studies, Minna, urged journalists to report credible and balanced issues on health issues toward improving the sector.
Earlier, Chairman of NUJ in the state, Malam Mohammed Mohammed, said that the press week was part of efforts to sensitise newsmen to the need to adhere to the ethics of the profession in their jobs.
