Dr. Dakuku Peterside, All Progressives Congress APC governorship candidate in Rivers State has stressed the need for every stakeholder to join hands and work in the overall interest of the state. According to him, when people work together, society will be better.
He made the plea at Iriebe Rehabilitation Centre, Port Harcourt during his Christmas visit to inmates.
“When we have the opportunity to serve Rivers State, we will work with other stakeholders and ensure that the best possible care is given to vulnerable members of society. We shall also work to integrate them back to society.
He told them that Christ is the hope of the world; therefore they should not be depressed by their current state.
Today, I wish to inform you that God knows that you are here and in this condition. Therefore be assured that you will be healed. Sickness can happen to anybody anytime, nobody has control over that. It happens to the young and old, rich and poor. That is why we pray for healing this day.
“But I am here with my wife and friends to celebrate Christmas with you and to reassure you of God’s love and mercy upon those who believe and trust in him. Christmas is a time to share love, that is why God gave us his son.
“The fact that you are sick does not mean that you should be rejected. As a people, we must show concern to the sick and the less privileged. I always say to people that if you want to know how a country is, look out for the way it treats its sick and the vulnerable. But I want to inform you today that it is not your fault that you are sick. The way we treat our people when they are sick shows who we are, whether we are good or bad, but above all, it shows also whether we value life.
If I say that I am not sad with your condition, then I am being economical with the truth. We can do better and I want to assure you that if I have the opportunity of serving this state, I will care for everybody, including the mentally and physically challenged because when we care, we please God. If we do the right thing, we will also have a better society. You know that when you are not happy, I will also not be happy. Therefore I have come with a few things so that you can eat and enjoy like other people.
“Please I want to plead with you not to despair, our governor Rt. Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is already working but we will continue from where he stops.
Responding, the principal of the centre, Mr. Livinus Assor commended Peterside for spending this year’s Christmas with them. He also pleaded with the APC candidate to continue supporting the centre. The principal promised that the centre will keep on praying for him until success is achieved.
Peterside thanked the care givers for their commitment and support to people in need. He prayed that God would also meet them at their points of need.
The visit was interspersed with prayer sessions.
