Ilorin – A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara, Alhaji Abubakar Ndakene, on Thursday said he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the interest of his people and for one united Shonga community.
Ndakene told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin that the decision was also informed by the need to associate with the ruling party to attract massive development to his community.
NAN reports that Ndakene, on Feb 24, officially defected to APC at the Emir of Shonga in Edu Local Government area of Kwara.
He also said that his defection was influenced by the Emir of Shonga, Dr Haliru Yahaya and the good people of Shonga who believed in his leadership qualities.
“I defected to associate with the ruling party, to bring development to the community. I have a key role to play as one of the leaders in the community, “he said.
The politician said that his sojourn in politics was to uplift his people, adding that it would be uncomfortable for him to be in the opposition.
Ndakene further stressed that his defection was not to create disunity as alleged being in some quarters.
According to him, it is the right of anybody to belong to any political party in the country, provided he or she meets the membership requirements.

The emir commended Ndakene for his commitment to uplift Shonga and enhance the welfare of its people.
“We are glad that he has returned and we want a united political force that will ensure social justice and massive development of our community,’’ the traditional ruler said.
The emir, however, sued for unity, oneness of the people of Shonga and collective efforts of all and sundry to ensure the growth and development of Shonga.
He also appealed to the Federal and state governments to consider indigenes of the community for political appointments.
