Nearly a year after its completion, Vice President Kashim Shettima has yet to move into his newly built official residence.
The residence, which cost ₦21 billion, was commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 7, 2024. The project took 14 years to complete, with an initial ₦7 billion approval in 2010 and an additional ₦15 billion sanctioned by the National Assembly in November 2023. However, Shettima has not spent a single day in the building since its completion.
Sources familiar with the situation suggest that security concerns are the main reason for the delay. They claim the location of the residence is not ideal for a high-ranking public official like the Vice President, raising safety concerns for him and his family. However, there has been no official confirmation of these concerns.
Despite the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration handing over the residence to the Presidency, the building remains unoccupied. A visit to the site on January 31, 2025, reportedly showed only a few plainclothes security operatives present, with little activity in the area.
The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has confirmed that all work on the residence has been completed and formally transferred to the Presidency.
