Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Social Media, Reno Omokri has reacted to the announcement and release of ministerial portfolios to the 45 ministerial designates, saying that Nyesom Wike’s appointment as Minister of FCT marks the first time a Southerner has been appointed FCT Minister since Mobolaji Ajose-Adeogun was appointed to that position in 1976.
Recall that the immediate past governor of Rivers State who is a chieftain of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was yesterday appointed as the Minster of the Federal Capital Territory.
Political pundits are of the view that his appointment is not unconnected with the role he played in his state (Rivers State) on one hand and as leader of G-5 in the emergence of Bola Tinubu as president in the February 25, 2023 presidential election.
Wike was the leader of the aggrieved G-5 PDP Governors who worked against the party for given the party’s presidential ticket to Atiku Abubakar, a norther instead of complying with the party rotation arrangement between the North and South.
Reno who made the observation via his verified twitter handle @renoomokri said:
The appointment by President Bola Tinubu of ex-Governor Nyesom Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory will mark the first time a Southerner has been appointed FCT Minister since Mobolaji Ajose-Adeogun was appointed to that position in 1976 by the then Head of State.
Sundiata Post recalls that Wike yesterday visited the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Gaduje, Abuja.
Wike, who worked against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 election, has repeatedly denied plotting to join the ruling party.
“I am not a member of APC and will not be. But, they have made me recognise that they are the heroes of this country. APC governors came out to say for the unity of this country, the presidency should go to the south,” he once said while dismissing the rumor.
But during a thanksgiving service organised in his honour shortly after he handed over power in Rivers, Governor Simi Fubara asked Wike not to abandon him if he ends up in the ruling party.
