OSOGBO – A 38-year-old woman, Funke Adewara, who allegedly collected N600, 000 on the pretext of supplying palm oil to a trader, was on Friday docked at an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court.
Funke, whose address is unknown, is facing a three-count offence bordering on theft and obtaining money under false pretences.
The prosecutor, Insp. Solomon Oladele, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan. 15, 2013 at Oke Ayepe in Osogbo.
Oladele alleged that the accused obtained the money from a woman, Toyin Adewara, on the pretext of supplying her palm oil.
He said the accused neither supplied the commodity nor refunded the money.
He said the offences contravened Sections 390(9), 419 and 421 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Counsel to the accused, Mr Okobe Nagite, urged the court to grant her bail.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Adebayo Lasisi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties must swear to an affidavit that they are gainfully employed and also provide two passport-size photographs.
Further hearing in the case has been fixed for June 16. (NAN)
Ibile Games: Hammed vows to win table tennis gold Lagos Island (sports)
LAGOS – Adeyinka Hammed, a table tennis player, representing Lagos Island Local Government at the ongoing “Ibile Games” on Friday boasted of winning a gold medal in the local government category of the event.
Hammed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that he was a bronze medalist at the last Ibile Games and was determined to emerge as the best in the current competition.
The table tennis event at the Games is holding at the Knock-Up Hall, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Hammed said: “In 2013, I got to the semi-finals where I lost and ever since then I have been training regularly to improve on my skills for a day like this,” he said.
The player said that he was sure of emerging the overall winner in this competition having won a gold medal at the last 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos in 2012.
He said that he had garnered a lot of experience at the festival which had helped him to improve on his skills.
He added that those experiences and skills would be to his advantage in the ongoing Games.
“I am in perfect shape to for this competition and I want to assure my fans that I will not disappoint them,” he said.
Hammed, however, said that he might face a tough time against some notable players such as Azeez Ogunlade of Surulere Local Government but said that he would prove his mettle.
He said the competition would serve as a preparatory ground for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games scheduled for July 23 to Aug. 3 in Scotland. (NAN)
